Introduction

Congratulations to all the successful Chevening scholars who are embarking on an exciting journey to the United Kingdom for their master’s degree! As you prepare for this new chapter in your life, it’s essential to equip yourself with knowledge and tips to ensure a smooth transition and stay. In this article, I provide you with valuable insights on the next steps after the selection email such as the best time to travel, dealing with homesickness, self-care, academic rigor, weather considerations, accommodation search, shopping tips, part-time jobs, and saving for exploring Europe. Let’s dive in!

Traveling

After your selection email, focus on meeting all the conditions as soon as possible to get the Final Award Letter. This will allow you to apply for a visa in time. It is advisable to travel in time to attend the activities slated for the orientation week before the lectures start. These activities such as library services or other forms of support the university offers will be crucial in your academic journey.

Searching for the Right Accommodation

Start your accommodation search early to secure a comfortable living arrangement. University-managed accommodations or private rentals are popular choices. Consider factors such as location, affordability, and proximity to your campus. Reach out to student accommodation services for guidance and connect with fellow scholars to explore shared housing options. You might want to ask in the applicants’ WhatsApp or Facebook groups you are part of if there is anyone joining the same university as you and consider teaming up in sharing tips or even accommodation. Maximize on the Opportunities

Chevening and your university provide you with numerous opportunities for growth. These could be networking opportunities with various scholars, lecturers, or people outside academia or leadership roles such as being a Course or School Representative.  Remember Chevening is just the beginning, and if you maximize on these opportunities, you will be preparing for more influential roles in the future. In my year, I was elected as the School Representative, leading 7 course representatives, and sitting on the School’s Board of Teaching and Learning. I also participated in an optional programme that played a huge role in getting a Ph.D. studentship 2 years later. I also got the Student Achievement Award for the most contributions in my programme.

Dealing with Homesickness

Moving to a new country can be overwhelming, and homesickness is a common experience. Stay connected with your loved ones back home through video calls, messaging apps, and social media platforms. Additionally, try to meet fellow scholars and engage in local communities. This will help you build a support network and create a sense of belonging. One way, you can do this is by joining and participating in the universities’ societies and volunteering in the local community.

Self-Care and Well-being

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial during your time abroad. Establish a routine that includes regular exercise, healthy eating, journalling, and sufficient rest. UK universities often provide various sports and fitness facilities, so take advantage of them. Explore local parks, museums and stadiums, engage in hobbies, and join clubs or societies aligned with your interests. If you are spiritual or religious, you might search for a group that aligns with your beliefs. During my study, I learned the importance of meditation and journalling, which I practice today as I pursue my Ph.D. Apps such as Strava (physical exercise) or Spotify, Insight Timer, or Sound Cloud (for mindfulness practices) among others can be useful for your wellbeing.

Academic Rigor and Pressure

Studying for a master’s is academically demanding not to mention the fact that you will be in a foreign country but remember that you were selected as a Chevening scholar because of your capabilities. Manage your time effectively, stay organized, and seek support from your professors and academic advisors when needed. Take advantage of library resources, study groups, and workshops to enhance your learning experience.  I would recommend buying a daily planner where you schedule your tasks and having ways to limit distractions during your study hours such as switching off social media notifications.

Weather and Appropriate Clothing

The UK’s weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for all seasons. Layering your clothing is a practical approach, as it allows you to adapt to changing weather conditions. Invest in a waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes, and accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves to stay warm during colder months. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast regularly. It is advisable to buy your clothes in the UK as they are mostly affordable and what you consider warm in your country for those from tropical countries, might not be warm enough in the UK.

Shopping Tips -Student Discounts and Sustainable Options:

As a student, take advantage of the numerous student discounts available in the UK. For instance, on arrival, buy the annual Rail Card that ensures all your rail fares are slashed by a third. Always carry your student ID and explore retail outlets, restaurants, and entertainment venues that offer special deals. Additionally, prioritize sustainable living by utilizing “too good to go” food apps, which allow you to purchase discounted meals from local supermarkets, reducing food waste.

Part-Time Jobs

If you’re interested in taking up part-time work during your studies, familiarize yourself with UK visa regulations for international students. University career centers and online job portals are excellent resources for finding employment opportunities that fit your schedule and interests. Part-time jobs can provide valuable experience, financial support, and networking opportunities. Before taking a part-time job consider the academic demands of your programme. Additionally, make sure you follow your student guidelines on work hours otherwise the Home Office will cancel your visa.

Saving to Travel Europe

The UK’s central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring Europe. Plan your travels wisely and create a budget that allows you to save for these adventures. Look for affordable travel options such as student discounts on flights, train tickets, and accommodation. Be open to hostels, travel apps, and group tours that offer cost-effective experiences without compromising quality. Start applying for Schengen visas early enough for your travels, especially in Summer when the demand for visas is high and there are limited visa interview slots. Is anyone thinking of Paris Summer 2024 Olympics or Afro Nation? You might also want to travel to areas that accept UK visas. During my Chevening year, I traveled to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory along the Mediterranean Sea that borders Spain.

Conclusion

Embarking on your master’s degree as a Chevening scholar in the UK is an exciting and enriching journey. By following the tips provided in this article, you’ll be better equipped to not only deal with challenges you might encounter but also take advantage of the numerous opportunities Chevening presents to you.
